Embassy Life in DC Newsletter #15
“The journey, not the arrival, matters.”
The Week in Review (May 22nd - May 28th)
With this week done, we are essentially at the end of the month which is crazy to consider. The season of summer is upon D.C. with its usual intense heatwaves, irritating clouds of mosquitos, and dangerous humidity levels. However, there is an upside to the warm summers: night barbecues with neighbors, outdoor pool parties on the weekends, and rooftop bar drinking with happy hours!
Event Highlight: The Pilecki Report Film Screening (May 25th, 2023)
Previously, we had never visited the Victims of Communism (VOC) Museum near the McPherson metro stop. We remember seeing something about it in an article through the Washington Post, however, nothing concrete. The Pilecki Report film screening was held at the VOC Museum to commemorate the efforts of the WWII hero Captain Witold Pilecki who was among the most important intelligence agents of the war. Pilecki fought against two ruthless totalitarian forces of the 20th century including German Fascism and Soviet Communism all in the name of Poland. Even having a loving family, his sense of duty compelled him to volunteer to go to Auschwitz to report on the shocking scale of the Holocaust to the Allied powers.
After escaping Auschwitz, Pilecki returned to Poland in December 1945 participating in the Polish anti-communist underground movement. He was arrested later in May 1947 suffering a full year of interrogation and torture to reveal critical information about their operatives. Revealing nothing of value, he was questioned considerably about his written testimony of the German crimes in Auschwitz known as “The Pilecki Report” which was an inconvenience to the Polish communist government. Witold Pilecki was sentenced to death on trumped-up charges and executed in the Mokotów prison in Warsaw in a show trial.
We never knew about Pilecki or his story and surprisingly neither did Poland for a very long time. The Polish communist government had effectively censored his identity, accomplishments, and name from history to the point where Polish citizens today long after the war did not know his story. With this film screening, the Pilecki Report serves to tell the story of Captain Witold Pilecki as well as his bravery.
