The Week in Review (June 12th - June 18th )

Readers, we do not know how the week was for you but for us, it was fraught with a bunch of work! The weather was great with mostly sunny skies and warmer temperatures. We did notice that the mosquito swarms are now in season as well. June is rapidly vanishing with the middle of the month already passed. Pretty soon, it will be July with the nation’s birthday being celebrated. Stay hydrated out there and wear plenty of sunscreen!

Event Highlight: Marcos Pereyra Concert at the Embassy of Argentina (Wednesday, June 16th )

The Embassy of Argentina in tandem with the Ibero-American Cultural Association (AACIA) hosted guitarist Marcos Pereyra for a concert in front of a small crowd. Starting from the age of 4, Marcos played guitar and sang folkloric music such as chamarrita and chamame. He recorded his first album titled "Nostalgias" at the age of 12 and has grown in reputation on the international stage as he tours various parts of the United States.

The crowd was small but made up for the lack of numbers with a spirit that would make any artist cry with joy. Marcos stepped on stage with his guitar performing a series of Argentinean folk music pieces with varying speeds. Truth be told, we could not understand the lyrics of the songs nor the conversations he would have with the audience due to a lack of Spanish on our part. However, we noted that most of his songs were melancholic and somber signifying a remembrance for his home and family.

At the same time, the concert picked up intentionality when two surprise guests were invited on stage to perform with Marcos. One individual was an older gentlemen who was even more of an expert on the guitar than Marcos was! Another person was a woman whose voice was akin to a beautiful opera singer. Together, the trio was an impressive bunch as the crowd was swaying to the excellent combination of guitars and singing. This may be a sign that we need to start studying Spanish after this concert. Thank you to Marcos Pereyra, the Embassy of Argentina, and the AACIA for the event (you can check out the links to their websites and social media accounts through their names).
