  4. International Movie Night: Scarlet (2022) (5PM - 7PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: Loosely based on Scarlet Sails, a 1923 novel by Alexander Grin. This 2022 French drama film is about a girl who grows up to become a lonely woman who dreams of greater possibilities. Reckoning with her future, she soon gets swept away by a rakish young pilot who literally falls from the sky.

  5. Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti Book Talk (7PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Based on years of on-the-ground reporting in Haiti and interviews with politicians in the US and Haiti, independent aid contractors, UN officials, and Haitians who struggle for their lives, homes, and families, Aid State is a conscience-searing book of witness.

  1. From Commitments to Impact (9AM - 10:30AM) (FREE!)

    • Description: Since the mid-2010s, progress in reducing food insecurity and improving diet quality has stalled. Multiple shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, have exacerbated the situation and put Sustainable Development Goal 2 on Zero Hunger further out of reach.

  2. City Spies: Mission Manhattan Book Talk (10:30AM - 11:30AM) (FREE!) 📕

    • Description: Dive into the jazz universe of Alpha Trianguli and join us for a concert of four young Austrian musicians presenting their debut album.

  5. Film Screening: "Sibel" and Q&A with Çağla Zencirci & Guillaume Giovanetti (7PM - 9PM) ($6.27 - $11.54) 📽️ 

    • Description: 25-year-old Sibel lives with her father and sister in a remote village in the mountains of Turkey's Black Sea region. She is mute and communicates by using the ancient whistled language of their region.

  2. Malaysiakini and the Power of Independent Media in Malaysia (12:30PM - 2PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Malaysiakini and the Power of Independent Media in Malaysia, chronicles the success of Malaysia’s only truly independent media outlet. Founded in 1999 by Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, Malaysiakini was one of many online portals that sprung up in the wake of Reformasi, a period of public protests sparked by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad’s 1998 firing of his deputy Anwar Ibrahim.

  3. Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra Performance (6PM - 7PM) (FREE!)

    • Description: Members of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra emerge from the orchestra pit and take their place on the Millennium Stage to share the rich and varied chamber music repertoire. Each musician plays a solo part and the interaction among them creates an astonishing range of sounds and emotions.

  4. Countdown: The Blinding Future of Nuclear Weapons Book Talk (7PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Nuclear weapons are, today, as important as they were during the Cold War, and some experts say we could be as close to a nuclear catastrophe now as we were at the height of that conflict. Despite that, conversations about these bombs generally often happen in past tense.

  5. 20 Days in Mariupol Film Screening (8PM - 10PM) ($14.50 for adults) 📽️ 

    • Description: After nearly a decade covering international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war, for The Associated Press, 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL is Mstyslav Chernov’s first feature film. The film draws on Chernov’s daily news dispatches and personal footage of his own country at war. It offers a vivid, harrowing account of civilians caught in the siege, as well as a window into what it’s like to report from a conflict zone, and the impact of such journalism around the globe.

  1. “In The Life of a Building Our Moment is Brief” Lecture (4PM - 5:30PM) (FREE!)

    • Description: Join an in-depth presentation on one of the most influential Black architects of the 20th century, J. Max Bond Jr. (1935–2009).

  2. 1898 Revisions Poetry Night (5PM - 7PM) (FREE!)

    • Description: Presented in conjunction with our exhibition “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions,” this event centers poets with connections to the lands that the United States claimed sovereignty or influence over in the late 19th century. These artists will explore the history and impact of U.S. imperialism from their distinct social, political and cultural perspectives.

  3. Luciano - Bob Marley Birthday Celebration Tribute (8PM - 10PM) ($39.50)

    • Description: Born on the paradise island of Jamaica, as a youth he was heavily influenced and drawn to Bob Marley’s positive “One Love Movement”. As he got older and embarked on his own professional singing career, Luciano himself began to influence the lives of others around the world with his own spiritual interpretation of the movement.

    • Description: Come mingle and meet members of the Jete Society as we gear up for The Washington Ballet's Jazz Icons at the Kennedy Center.

  5. J-Film | 3ft Ball and Souls (6:30PM - 8:30PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: On an online message board, four strangers have decided to end their lives together. They keep their identities a secret and forbid any conversation or inquiry about their decision. On the chosen day, the strangers begin to gather to detonate a colossal 3ft sphere of fireworks.

    • Description: Brazilian-American multi-instrumentalist and composer Lucas Ashby brings to his projects a background in rhythms and melodies from South America, West Africa, India, Eastern Europe, American Jazz, & Hip Hop.

  5. Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra: The Legacy of Max Roach Performance (7PM - 9:30PM) ($25 for members, $30 for non-members)

    • Description: Under the artistic direction of maestro Charlie Young, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra has celebrated some of the greatest jazz music throughout its 33-year history as one of the crown jewels of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
