Monday, April 8th, 2024

  1. NATO at 75: Chartering a New Course (8AM - 5PM) (FREE!)

    • Description: Sponsored by the Center for Security Studies, this conference is inspired by the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

  2. Solar Eclipse Festival on the National Mall (12PM - 4PM) (FREE!) ☄️ 

    • Description: The event will run from 12 to 4 pm along the National Mall between 4th and 12th Streets. Browse the many activity stations to view the Sun in a variety of safe telescopes, and explore the different educational offerings from Smithsonian museums and partners. Event attendees are encouraged to bring their own solar eclipse viewers to the Festival. A limited number of solar eclipse glasses will be handed out during the event.

  3. Australian Women in DC (AWDC): A Conversation on Modern Leadership with Dr Kirstin Ferguson Book Talk (5:30PM - 8PM) ($45) 📕

  4. Profs & Pints DC: Shogun and Samurai (6PM - 8:30PM) ($16.89)

    • Description: Profs and Pints DC presents: “Shogun and Samurai,” a look at warriors and their leaders in feudal Japan, with Constantine Vaporis, historian and founder of the Asian Studies program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and author of The Samurai Encyclopedia.   1. Navigating Local Transitional Justice by Laura Martin Book Talk (5:30PM - 6:30PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Drawing on original fieldwork in Sierra Leone, Martin moves beyond discussions measuring effectiveness and considers how people navigate their circumstances in conflict and post-conflict societies.

  3. Washington DC Film Premiere: "Antoine the Fortunate" (7PM - 9PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: Based on Antoine Köpe’s private memoirs and unseen archive collection of unprecedented scope and beauty, "Antoine the Fortunate" tells the story of survival of a man and his family during the most turbulent times of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of modern Turkey.

  4.  Native Nations: A Millennium in North America Book Talk (7PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: In Native Nations, we see how Mohawks closely controlled trade with the Dutch, influenced global market, and how Quapaws manipulated French colonists. Power dynamics shifted after the American Revolution, but Indigenous people continued to command much of the continent’s land and resources.

  5. Emile Gueorguiev Naoumoff, Piano Solo Performance (7:30PM - 9:30PM) ($35) 🎶 

    • Description: Centennial celebration of the international legacy of Gabriel Fauré - Pieces by Fauré, Ravel, Nadia Boulanger, Naoumoff.

Wednesday, April 10th, 2024 

  1. Dinnertime Documentaries, Josephine Baker: The Story of an Awakening (5:30PM - 8:30PM) ($22 for adults, $12 for members, and $7 for students) 📽️ 

    • Description: Enjoy spring evenings at Hillwood with documentaries that highlight French history and culture at the turn of the century! Tour Hillwood’s mansion, gardens, greenhouse, special exhibition Marjorie Merriweather Post's Paris at Hillwood, eat a delicious meal at Merriweather Café, and enjoy a film. This evening’s featured documentary is Josephine Baker: The Story of an Awakening, directed by Ilana Navaro.

  2. Banda Magda Performance (6PM - 7PM) (FREE!) 🎶 

    • Description: Led by firecracker performer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda is a community. Their camaraderie shines with cross-pollinating melody and rhythm. The rotating madcap fellowship has traveled to more than 22 countries in five continents.

  3. Marie Gamillscheg Book Talk (7PM - 9:30PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Marie Gamillscheg was born in Graz, Austria, in 1992 and studied cross-cultural communication in Graz and Lyon before getting her MA in Eastern European studies from the Free University Berlin. Her debut novel Alles was glänzt was awarded the Debut Prize of the Austrian Book Prize in 2018, her second novel Aufruhr der Meerestiere was nominated for the German Book Prize 2022 and the Clemens Brentano Prize 2023. She works as a freelance writer and translator in Leipzig, and is currently a Writer-in-Residence at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA.

  4. Tango and Champagne Soiree: Argentine Tango Lessons and Dance Soiree (7PM - 9:30PM) ($32.86) 🎶 💃

    • Description: The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington and Transformer are pleased to present a conversation with Italian contemporary artist Irene Fenara, included in the New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024 exhibition by the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

  3. Live! at the Library: "Chasing Flavor" with Chef Carla Hall (6:45PM - 8:30PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: Join us for a screening of “Chasing Flavor” at 6:45 p.m. followed by a Q&A moderated by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. A book signing will follow, beginning at 8 p.m.

  4. The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic Book Talk (7PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: The story behind any classic is rich; the saga behind The Blues Brothers, as Daniel de Visé reveals, is epic, encompassing the colorful childhoods of Belushi and Aykroyd; the comedic revolution sparked by Harvard’s Lampoon and Chicago’s Second City; the birth and anecdote-rich, drug-filled early years of Saturday Night Live, where the Blues Brothers were born as an act amidst turmoil and rivalry; and of course the indelible behind-the-scenes narrative of how the film was made, scene by memorable scene.

  5. Mariana Quinteros Sings Tango (8PM - 10PM) ($45+) 🎶 

    • Description: Latin Grammy nominee, Mariana Quinteros, sings tangos from her latest recording. With Anibal Berraute on piano and Javier Sanchez on bandoneón, enjoy an evening of song and Argentine wine to celebrate the 18th DC Tango Festival. No physical tickets; your name will be on a list at the door on the night of the concert.

  1. Profs & Pints DC: When Washington Burned (6PM - 8:30PM) ($16.89)

    • Description: Profs and Pints DC presents: “When Washington Burned,” a detailed look at the devastating 1814 British attack on the Capitol, with Denver Brunsman, associate professor of history at George Washington University, lecturer at Mount Vernon, and scholar of the American revolution and early American republic.

  2. The Art of the Benshi: Program One (7PM - 10PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: This April, the Art of the Benshi 2024 World Tour offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the mesmerizing artistry of three of Japan’s celebrated benshi—“movie orators” who, since the days of Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope, have been breathing life into silent film. Joined by an ensemble of musicians from Japan, these masters of their art will transport viewers back to the golden age of silent film, when every movie screening was also a live performance.

  3. Concert and French Wine Reception at the Embassy of France (7PM - 9:30PM) ($70.20) 🎶 🍷 

    • Description: The International Club of DC and the RCAS cordially requests the pleasure of your company at the Embassy of France, La Maison Francaise, for a delightful evening of classical music.   1. 2024 National Cherry Blossom Parade (10AM - 12PM) ($28.25 - $45.20 for different placements of seatings with tickets) 🌸 

    • Description: One of DC's largest spectator events, the energy-filled National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade® presented by Events DC runs for 10 blocks along iconic Constitution Avenue. Giant colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, celebrity entertainers, and performers burst down the Parade route in a grand spectacle of music and showmanship seen only once a year during the Festival.

  2. 2024 DC Beer Festival (12PM - 8PM) ($50 for general admission, $90 for VIP admission) 🍺 

    • Description: DC's largest beer festival, featuring over 80 breweries, food trucks, bands, dueling pianos, and much more, is returning to Nats Park! The DC Beer Festival is bringing together dozens of craft breweries, featuring their spring seasonal beers.

  3. Kids Kino: What the Finn?! – Summer Of Surprises Film Screening (6PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: Stefan Westerwelle captures the spirit of childhood adventures in this award-winning movie for kids 8 and older.

  4. Between Good and Evil: The Stolen Girls of Boko Haram Book Talk (5PM - 6PM) (FREE!) 📕
