    • Description: AFI Silver Theatre and the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. co-present Spanish Cinema Now, an annual festival of outstanding new films that reflect the breadth of styles and talents at work in Spain today.

  2. Authors & Insights: A Conversation with Author Carlos Lozada (5:30PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 

    • Description: Learn how Washington’s power players reveal themselves through their writings, from tell-all accounts to campaign biographies, and gain a clearer understanding of the competing visions of our country. The event will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Carlos will sign copies of his book before and after the program.

    • Description: Profs and Pints DC presents: “Yanks in World War II Britain,” a D-Day anniversary look at Americans' life in the UK in the lead-up to history’s largest invasion, with Kevin Matthews, who teaches courses on 20th century European history as a professor of history at George Mason University.

  1. Istiwanāt Live! Arabic Music Ensemble in a Homegrown Concert Series Archive Challenge (12PM - 1PM) (FREE!) 🎵 

    • Description: Istiwanāt Live! Arabic Music Ensemble reinterprets music that was originally performed 100 years ago for a transnational industry of Arab, Arab American and international record labels, and which has recently been released into the public domain. The concert is inspired by the "Archive Challenge,” an initiative of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, and draws on archived recordings in Loeb Library at Harvard University and the Library of Congress.

    • Description: Washington, D.C. native Leigh Pilzer is a baritone saxophone specialist, composer, arranger, and educator. Her performance resumé includes appearances with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and more.

  4. The Candidate, a Parody by the Picnic Theatre Company (6:30PM - 9PM) ($12 for students, $20 for general admission) 🎭️ 

    • Description: On Wednesday June 5, join us as Picnic Theatre Company returns to La Maison Française at the Embassy of France with an original parody play adaptation of The Candidate, set in 1972!

  5. Rumrunning, Codebreaking, and The Last Twelve Miles Book Talk (6:30PM - 8PM) (FREE!) 📕 

    • Book Description: Elizebeth Smith Friedman is renowned for her codebreaking during World War I and II, but between the wars she took on rumrunners during prohibition. In her new novel Erika Robuck is inspired by Friedman and real-life rumrunning royalty “Spanish Marie” to tell an atmospheric tale of two women locked in a deadly cat-and-mouse game on opposite sides of the Prohibition Rum Wars.

    • Description: Casting a humorously ironic gimlet eye on the film festival culture in which he had by then become entrenched, Hong Sangsoo’s 2009 feature stars Kim Tae-woo (Joint Security Area) as Goo Kyeong-nam, an art house filmmaker who travels to Jecheon to serve on a film festival jury, the members of which mainly drink, gossip, and sleep through the movies.

    • Description: In a prime example of Hong Sangsoo’s theme-and-variation comedic construction, the nighttime streets of Seoul become conduits for nostalgia, painful reunions, and fortuitous chance encounters when a lapsed filmmaker (Hong regular Yoo Jun-sang) returns from the countryside for a brief visit.

  5. Embassy Evening at the New Residence of Serbia’s Ambassador (5:30PM - 8:30PM) ($69.51) 🇷🇸

    • Description: In Hong Sangsoo’s second feature, the themes and formal audacities that characterize his work begin to emerge in full. Set in the famous natural beauty of the titular province, it begins as the story of Jisook, who is vacationing with two friends to try to get over a disastrous affair with a married man.

  5. Hill of Freedom Film Screening (Sunday, June 16th, 2PM - 3:10PM) (FREE!) 📽️ 

    • Description: In what Glenn Kenny of The New York Times called “one of [Hong Sangsoo’s] most daring gambits,” a young woman named Kwon begins reading a packet of letters that have fallen out of order. The film depicts what she reads, leaping back and forth in time to tell the story of the relationship between Kwon and the writer, Mori (Ryo Kase, Like Someone in Love), a Japanese man who has returned to Korea to search for her.
