International Embassy and Cultural Events in Washington DC (April 24th - April 30th)

Embassy Life in DC Newsletter #10

Rewinding the Week (April 17th - April 23rd) ↞

On the eve of Issue No.10, I am writing this in the middle of a thunderstorm which is fascinating as I feel a surge of creativity with the rain and thunder. This week was impressive with the Embassy of Malawi and Songbyrd Music House having awesome events that I attended. In addition, I had some folks at these events come up to me and explain that they actually used the curated list in every newsletter!

That made me super happy to hear since I spend a large amount of time researching, writing, and posting the events on social media! In some respects, this becomes my “second job” during the week and weekend. However, that is quite alright since this is a passion of mine.

Event Highlight: The Embassy of Malawi (April 20th)

The Embassy of Malawi event was on the smaller side compared to other embassy events I had previously attended in the past. I personally enjoy smaller venues since it lets people connect more easily compared to gigantic crowds. A group of around 20-40 people on a hot, summer night enjoyed meeting the Ambassador along with several diplomatic staff. The open bar was manned by the faithful employees of the Things To Do DC company offering a tasting of Malawian gin mixed in with orange juice. Finally, the Malawian food that was served included large portions of rice, fish, and desserts including fried treats akin to doughnuts here in the United States.

What struck me the most throughout the entire night was the friendliness of not just the Malawian diplomatic staff but the Ambassador herself. A key trait of the Malawian culture is to be kind to others as well as yourself which was communicated quite evidently. It was a honor to meet the Ambassador, diplomatic staff, and just experience the entire night along with newly made friends. Thank you to all parties involved for an amazing night!
