Embassy Life in DC Newsletter #11
↞ Rewinding the Week (April 23rd - April 30th) ↞
As we roll back the last week of April and enter May, the city of Washington D.C. is met with a torrent of surprise rainstorms! They say that the spring season brings spring showers, but not like this. I was asleep in the early hours of the morning when a massive thunderbolt cracked across the sky emanating a sonic boom. The force of the lightning was so powerful, I felt my windows rattle in their frames reverberating from the electrical charge in the air.
Hopefully, as we enter the Passport DC month of May, the skies are blue, sunny, and clear with some cloud cover to provide some respite from the sun. Keep your hats on folks, May is going to be such a fun month!
Event Highlight: The Embassy of Mongolia (April 28th)
It was a dark and stormy night when I arrived at the gates of the Embassy of Mongolia. I took refuge underneath the covered entrance along with other visitors who were equally parts wet and irritated at the weather. Upon being let in, we were greeted as per usual by the awesome folks at Things To Do DC along with some Mongolian performers who were rehearsing. The night was awash with amazing performances from Mongolian singers who could give their European opera counterparts a run for their euro to dances by a group who were entertaining to behold. The crowd at the embassy was definitely on the bigger side with the whole conference room being at capacity. All of this was preceded by a five minute documentary of the wonders of Mongolia with a fun fact of 43% of the whole population living in the capital of Ulaanbaatar.
One of the greatest moments of the night was the reveal of how much food there was prepared for the guests. We are talking a whole banquet of seafood, meat, vegetables, salads, and deserts. I was incredulously stunned by the sheer amount of catering that had been done for tonight. The line quickly formed up and the mountainful plates of food began being taken to all corners of the room to be eaten. It was insane! I believe that out of all the embassy events I have gone to, the Embassy of Mongolia reigns supreme with how good they took care of the guests that night. Many thanks to the Ambassador, diplomatic staff, and performers of the night!

Final Notes!
It is OFFICIALLY PASSPORT DC which is a month-long event serving to highlight the international scene that DC has to offer with embassies and cultural centers. Please be aware that the Around the World Embassy Tour is on May 6th starting at 10AM - 4:30PM. Here are a couple of pro tips from people that have spoken to me about the event:
The crowds are going to plentiful! Look ahead of time to see which embassies you are going to want to visit on their website (links above!)
Be mindful of the weather! Be it sunny or rainy, the event will happen so be prepared!
Parking will be horrendous near the embassies, please consider just taking the metro or bus over there.
Make sure you get your souvenir passport to be stamped at the embassies. Souvenir passports will be available at Dupont Circle and Van Ness Information booths.
This event is FREE and open to the public! That being said, embassies may run out of free items due to the sheer amount of crowds.
We also have the following events coming up and/or at happening at the same time:
Flower Mart at the Washington National Cathedral (May 5th - May 6th, 2023)
EU Open House (May 13th, 2023)
Fiesta Asia Street Fair (May 20th, 2023)
As always, have a great time AND…
