Event Highlight: Latin American Design (LAD) Week Lecture, Fashion as Resistance (October 12th )

Journeying into The Morrow Hotel in the NoMa neighborhood was an experience. On the 11th floor lay a fancy lounge room where the Nova Bossa staff were busy preparing for the lecture overlooking the city of Washington DC. A style of modern décor was tastefully evident through the choice of immaculate furniture and objects placed around the room. In addition, a bar with shiny glassware gleamed as the sun quickly began to set.

Mexican fashion designer Carla Fernández and senior curator of educational programs at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Tanya Meléndez-Escalante were discussing Fernández’s manifesto known as Fashion as Resistance. The LAD Week featured similar events acting as a nexus for Latin American fashion and culture here in the DC area. The crowd attentively listened as Carla and Tanya answered questions about sustainability, fashion, and entrepreneurship with women fashion designers in Latin America.

Photographer Eric Sebastian Mindling also discussed his exhibition “Oaxaca Stories in Cloth” detailing the textile tradition in Oaxaca located in southern Mexico. Portraits of his work were also available for viewing around the lounge area. The Morrow Hotel was an amazing host for the event and clearly wanted to give back to the NoMa community through this LAD week. Thank you to Nova Bossa for inviting us to the event.
