Say HELLO To These DC Summer International Events!

“ A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.”
Reviewing The Week (Monday, July 3rd - Sunday, July 9th )
This week’s 4th of July was a barrage of celebrations accompanied with fireworks. The primary celebration was at the National Mall officially. Unofficially, there were plenty of auxiliary celebrations in our part of town. We swear there was one firework that sounded like a bomb going off in our neighborhood. The concussive force set off a slew of car alarms down multiple streets. Coming back from a late-night run, we saw the imprint of a large object on the street with blackened soot all around.
In any case, we attended the Holy Beasts movie as part of the XV Ibero-American Film Showcase, part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and Day 2 of the Romanian DC Festival at the Wharf. Check out details about one of these events below.

Event Highlight: Holy Beasts (XV Ibero-American Film Showcase) (Wednesday, July 5th )
The beating, hot sun shone down on us as we walked towards the Embassy of Colombia with 90 degree heat and lots of humidity. Diving from shade to shade in buildings and trees, we reached the open doors of the Embassy of Colombia showcasing the Holy Beasts film as part of the XV Ibero-American Film Showcase. There was a breath of cold air as we walked into the showing room with the AC unit running overtime. Outside, the cultural attaché to the embassy was greeting guests and encouraging them to try some of the Dominican foods that were available.
Holy Beasts starred Geraldine Chaplin as a drifting actress at the end of her career trying to direct an unfinished musical. This drama was inspired by the works of the Dominican director Jean Louis Jorge. Several conflicts act as obstacles to Geradline’s vision including pseudo-vampires (yes, you read that right!). The movie was equally thriller as it was metaphysical exploring the concepts of what drives a person to finish off a vision a dead friend had left behind in the world.
Thank you to the Colombian Embassy for hosting us and the folks at the Ibero- American Cultural Attachés Association!
